Stretching for 137 Km. along Ecuador’s Pacific Coastline lies the Sun Route. The route is dotted with dazzling white sand beaches, picturesque fishing villages, hundreds of bird species, modern cities and protected natural reserves. Along the route, local markets offer the abundant produce of a fertile land and a generous ocean as well as handicrafts indigenous to the region.

Puerto López is a nice small fishing village set in an arched bay on the pacific coast. It’s a reference for Ecotourism. From there you can visit la “Isla de la Plata”, referred as the “Alternative Galapagos”. Blue and red footed boobies, frigatebirds, albatross, coral reef, there is a lot to see there. You can also experience whale-watching and see dolphins around Puerto Lopez. From there you can also visit the beaches of Los Frailes, and be stunned by the beauty of these protected beaches. For culture and history lovers, remnants of the Manta (AD 500), Machalillia (1500 BC) and Salango (3000 BC) cultures can be observed within the park.

For bird enthusiasts, the nearby Santa Elena Peninsula and Santa Clara Island provides the largest refuge for maritime birds in Ecuador. The tallest mangroves in the world are located along the Spondylus route, in the forest of Majagual in the Cayapas-Mataje Ecological Reserve in the province of Esmeraldas.
